You think it’s just some cheesy line, something the person you’re in a relationship with uses to fool you? It’s not.
We hardly say this to each other anymore. Not in marriage, not in relationships. Physically, we may be sitting next to each other, but in one hand there’s almost always a phone we keep scrolling through with half an eye. So this kind, heartfelt sentence is no longer something we hear from one another, but increasingly from AI—just when we’re about to close the chat window.
It’s there. Always kind, always helpful, never tired, never impatient. It always answers. And it is present in your life. In your relationship. In your marriage. There are four of you, yet only two. We ask it for advice on our problems. All of them. But how does all this fit into a real human relationship?
In Do Pick’s experimental performance, artificial intelligence does not appear as an anthropomorphized character, but participates in the play through its own operational logic: through two open chat windows, responding in real time to the situations on stage. As a result, no performance can be fully planned. Each one unfolds differently, even if the storyboard is fixed. This fundamentally alters the traditional rules of acting, introducing the principle of “no script.”
In this form, artificial intelligence has not yet appeared in theatrical performance.
Here, AI does not play a character, but takes part in the performance through its own functioning logic. The GUTstage Non-Deterministic Theatre production creates a new theatrical situation: artificial intelligence appears on stage not as a character, but as a real-time communication partner.
From this real-time presence, highly charged tensions emerge, revealing both the differences and the similarities between artificial and human intelligence. One of the key recognitions of the piece is that the question always determines the answer.
Premiere: Grazer Ungarisches Theater, March 7, 2026
Concept and direction: Do Pick
The production applies a previously unused experimental form of real-time AI presence on stage. The format was developed within the GUTstage workshop of the Grazer Ungarisches Theater.
